I'm not a big fan of motivation.
I'm a big fan of discipline.
Because motivation is a high. Which eventually leads to a low.
Motivation also isn't linear, so if you're just executing your training and nutrition when you're "motivated," you're progress won't be linear (you will just continue going up and down in your physique, health, energy, etc).
Personally, I want to exercise maybe once a week. The other 7 it's a mindset focus to get me in.
Here are 5 hacks that will ENSURE YOU ARE CRUSHING YOUR WORKOUTS CONSISTENTLY AND NOT SKIPPING!!!
Workout at the same time everyday - This may sound mundane. But creativity breeds in structure and routine. Kobe Bryant believes having a routine is critical: "A lot of time, creativity comes from structure. When you have those parameters and structure, then within that you can be creative. If you don't have structure, you're just aimlessly doing stuff." You don't have to go "balls to the walls" every workout. Cycle your intensities and training styles and train smarter.
Focus out - Men are selfish. Women don't prioritize themselves. Men - focus on being just that, a man. Be a role model and be healthy to be the leader for your friends and/or family. Push yourself to exercise to be a better person for everyone else, your kids, family, unhealthy co-worker you've been trying to get to make a life change. Women - focus on putting your oxygen mask on first before anyone else's. Focus on how much better you'll feel and be able to prioritize everything else once you take care of yourselves.
Get energy - you're probably feeling tired, burnt out, focused on something that happened at work, or just have zero energy. Well, what ACTIONS are you taking to feel energized and present? Do some jumping jacks, blast some EDM music, watch some motivational videos. Take action to feel different.
Pre workout - Caffeine if in the morning. Non-stim if training in the evening. This will increase blood flow, mental focus, and energy (even sans caffeine).
Workout buddy - I workout 5am at Gold's Gym Venice with the head coach at DC Fitness. Just knowing that someone is expecting me to be there at a certain time not only ensures I will be there but that I will be on time. Find someone dependable who has already been training consistently. And understand that if they're serious enough about their workouts, you flake on them once, they'll kick your ass out of the workout buddy club!
Do it IMMEDIATELY after you get off from work - When we give ourselves a "break" after a workday before hitting our workout, we tend to sit around, negotiate with ourselves, or do more work. Procrastination is the biggest form of self-sabotage. DISCIPLINE yourself to start your workout immediately after your work day, don't put any time to "rest." I put "break" and "rest" in quotes because let's be honest, you haven't done any physical work at your job (unless you're working manual labor) so you don't need a physical break. Give yourself a mental break by getting in a physical workout.
